Framework and the Innovation Union Conference

Date: Wednesday 1 June 2011

Venue: The International Auditorium, Brussels, Belgium

In response to the economic crisis, European research programmes are shifting markedly towards activities that lead directly to more innovation by European businesses. The European Commission’s proposal for a Common Strategic Framework underlines this trend. But those at the receiving end of Framework funding query how this fresh agenda will shape the research programmes that will succeed the 7th Framework Programme. Will funding be geared towards large multinationals or small businesses? And could this lead to a marginalisation of academic interests?

Africa: building on growth

A 2-day International Policy Summit organised by the Development Policy Forum (DPF) led by Friends of Europe and by This is Africa, a publication of the Financial Times

This new century is witnessing a dramatic economic turnaround in Africa’s fortunes, with six of the world’s 10 fastest-growing economies today in sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, the European Union is setting out strategies to steer growth in Europe but also in developing countries by promoting the role of the private sector.  A new era, allying business and development, has opened up.

But if Africa is to remain a growth region, what policies should its governments and private sector investors pursue? Is trade a powerful enough mechanism to increase market opportunities at regional level and ensure food security for 800 million Africans? How can companies contribute to development without sacrificing their bottom line? How can countries create the best policies to promote good business without creating too many barriers for investors?  What social and environmental footprints do businesses leave in Africa? Can education and health policies support African economic growth?

These issues will be debated by Karel de Gucht, European Commissioner for Trade, and Andris Piebalgs, European Commissioner for Development, as well as top business and civil society representatives and political leaders.

We anticipate the participation of several hundred stakeholders from business, institutions, governments and civil society from Europe and Africa, as well as the international media. Please click to download the programme and the registration form in English and French.
