Environment: Commission biodiversity campaign wins international award

The European Commission's campaign to highlight awareness of biodiversity loss has won a prestigious award in the field of communication, a "European Excellence Award.” These awards – which are chosen by an independent jury of 30 leading communications professionals – are intended to honour outstanding achievements by communications professionals. The award is in the Environment and Ecology category. The campaign, which centres round a viral film and the slogan “weareallinthistogether”, has reached millions of Europeans around the continent, and will continue until next year.

Digital Agenda: Commission signs eHealth agreement with US Department of Health

Vice-President of the European Commission Neelie Kroes and United States Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius have today signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Washington to promote a common approach on the interoperability of electronic health records and on education programmes for information technology and health professionals. Common standards and interoperability stand to create huge growth opportunities for the eHealth industry as well as having a positive impact on the safety and quality of care. A skilled health IT workforce is necessary to make the benefits of eHealth services available to patients. This agreement aims to boost the potential of the eHealth market for EU companies wishing to do business in the US and vice versa. Promoting the use of eHealth technologies, with a view to improving the quality of health care, reducing medical costs and fostering independent living, including in remote places, is key objective of the Digital Agenda for Europe.

State aid: Commission authorises Sweden to grant SEK222 million (€24 million) for biofuel research project «GoBiGas»

The European Commission has authorised under EU state aid rules a support of SEK222 million (approximately € 24 million) that Sweden intends to grant to the Gothenburg Biofuels Gasification (GoBiGas) research and development (R&D) project. Göteborg Energi AB, a Swedish energy company, will manage the project, which will be carried out by its subsidiary, GoBiGas AB. The objective of the project is to develop a pre-commercial demonstration plant for the gasification of forest residue. The Commission has concluded that the project is compatible with the EU Framework for State aid for research, development and innovation (R&D&I). In particular, the aid aims at tackling a market failure and generates positive effects for the EU, notably increased research activities, environmental protection and security of energy supply.

Europeans in quest to fight gender and sexual-based victimisation

Asylum seekers, young refugees and undocumented migrants are at greater risk of being victimised, from gender and sexual standpoints, at reception and asylum centres in Europe, according to a new study.
The research was funded in part by the SENPERFORTO project, which is backed by the European Commission's Daphne Fund. The objective of this Fund is to prevent and fight all forms of violence against women, young people and women. It also aims to support organisations active in this field and to foster cooperation between them.
