EU Sustainable Energy Week Share of renewables in the EU27 energy supply almost doubled between 1999 and 2009


In 2009, oil remained the main source of energy in the EU27, with a share of 37% in the total gross inland energy consumption1. However, there have been changes in the mix of sources contributing to gross inland energy consumption over the last decade. The share of renewable energy has almost doubled, from 5% of total gross inland energy consumption in 1999 to 9% in 2009, while gas rose from 22% to 24%. Nuclear energy remained almost stable at 14% during this period, while oil fell from 39% to 37% and solid fuels from 18% to 16%.

Europeans making medical treatment priority for kids


Health practitioners and parents want the best for children, and helping drive this objective is the PRIOMEDCHILD ('Coordination of research on priority medicines for children') initiative, a Coordinated Action funded under the ERA-NET scheme of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). PRIOMEDCHILD, backed with more than EUR 1.7 million, created a European platform for research, development and innovation of paediatric medicines by funding, coordinating and networking national programmes and researchers across Europe, now launched an EUR 8 million Joint Call.

The European Commission launched the regional information and communication programme (2011-2013) for the Neighbourhood Partners


Today, the European Commission approved the regional information and communication programme (2011-2013) aiming the 16 Neighbourhood countries. The purpose of this programme, to a value of € 14 million, is to improve the comprehension and the visibility of the EU policy and the cooperation in the neighbouring countries.

EU and Brazil launch policy dialogue on higher education and culture


Better policy co-operation in higher education and culture will be the main focus of an official visit to Brazil next week (3-9 April) by Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth.


The Commissioner, who is making her first official visit to the country, will meet Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota, Minister of Education Fernando Haddad and Minister of Culture Ana Buarque de Hollanda in Brasilia. Her programme will also include high-level meetings in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador. The main objective is to launch EU-Brazil policy dialogues on higher education and culture. The discussions will also feed into the next EU-Brazil summit, due to take place in Brussels in October.
